Inspired by “wycinanki” from my Polish heritage, I create intricate, colorful, abstract artwork made primarily from, or including elements of, hand cut paper. I like to combine old technique with modern approaches, each piece sharing the story of preserving and evolving a unique cultural tradition in an increasingly homogeneous global society.
ABOUT WYCINANKI
Wycinanki (vih-chee-non-kee) is the Polish version of the art form of papercutting dating from the early to mid 19th century. It was traditionally created in rural areas of Poland using sheep shears and used as gifts and decoration for homes. Distinct styles evolved and developed from different regions as techniques were handed down from generation to generation.
